As my winter break is coming to a close, I realized that I have not thought too much about how my first semester away at college had really effected me. With only one week left until classes start up again, I figured right now would be the perfect time to reflect on what has changed/influenced me in the last 6 months away during my freshman year.
1.) How much more outgoing and talkative I have become:
While away at school, I am forced to explore into the horizons with new and different people than while at home. I actually have to think for myself and make my own decisions, rather than having my parents at home constantly influencing me.
2.) The further down south in Missouri you go, the nicer the people:
While I have always lived right near KC, I have always just been used to my peers and community. Not saying that everyone at home is rude and snobby, but I have learned that down south in Missouri, almost every person I have came into contact with is super friendly and nice, which helped make my first semester away much easier.
3.) NOTHING is truly free:
While colleges are constantly having FREE movie nights, activities, and things to join or do, none of it is actually free. In your student bill, you can sometimes find a whole list of things you didn’t know you were actually paying for (Although it is a GREAT idea to take advantage of it all, as you are paying for it).
4.) How socially acceptable it is to have absolutely no idea what you really want to do or where to go in life:
College is definitely the place to explore new interests or talents in order to help you really find a place or fit for you!
5.) To not worry about the small hurdles that come into your way:
Being between the ages 18-24, a lot can happen and a lot does happen! It is a good idea to just breathe and don’t worry so much about that bad test score you just got (work harder) or that super cute boy that stares at you in one of your classes (probably not worth your time) or just where you want to be (YOU HAVE TIME).
6.) Lastly, how proud I am of myself:
In high school, I didn’t realize how hard college would be. I am proud to say that I think I knocked down everything in my way, though. I finished my first semester with very good grades, met so many amazing people, and am that much closer to finding out who I am and what I want to be.
All in all, college is a great place to go not just for an education, but for yourself as well. If you have any ideas/requests about any more college related blogs, just let me know down below and I will get right on it. Thanks so much for reading!
