Although we still do have awhile till school starts back up, it is time to start preparing for the semester ahead of you. No more procrastinating my friend; let’s get this semester started off right! Since last year, which was my first year of college, I have learned quite a bit of tips and tricks to work around stress and last-minute thinking. Although classes may not start until the end of August, there is so much to get done that no one tells you to work on. No fear though, I am here to help!
BEFORE SEMESTER STARTS-
Get schedule planning & financial aid taken care of:
The first step is the most stressful step of all: money and planning out classes. The first few years of college may feel like they will be such a drag because of all the gen-ed classes you will be forced to take. Going along with crappy classes, financial aid and money is a HUGE factor of getting ready for your upcoming semester. This step may take up to a couple of weeks to finalize, so you should be sure to get the ball rolling early on this one!
This one isn’t as serious as the last one, but it is something that will need to be done before the first week of school or else you will be dealing with little to no supply of books you need or missing out on assignments because you don’t have the material to complete it. You can find out which books you need through your student college accounts or by checking lists online.
Stalk your professors:
I don’t mean to become a criminal on this one, but be sure to research and find out more about them! Ratemyprofessors is one of my most favorite sites when the back-to-school time comes around, as you can see reviews on them and find out what you will truly be dealing with. The site is free to use and is super easy to navigate!
Make a list of goals/priorities:
This is one of my favorite things to do right before school starts because I have a strong mindset and have made steps in order to achieve my specific goals. Remember to not ever beat yourself up if you slip a little bit, just maybe go back and see if changes need to be made in order for your goals to be reached.
DURING THE SEMESTER-
Plan, plan, plan & read your syllabus:
Bring out your planners, my friends. Once that syllabus is in your hand, you have a fast start at being able to write in your planners what assignments are due when along with when tests/exams are. They are sometimes subject to change, but for the most part, syllabus never lie.
Get into the habit of completing homework & studying before hand:
Last year, I had a set schedule down for homework and I must say, it really paid off. I am not trying to sound like an over-achiever here, but after my classes (always in the mornings) I would go back to my dorm and fire away on any assignments that are due. I also had awesome professors that assigned work on Mondays and I would get it all done by Wednesday so I had the rest of the week to do whatever I wanted. Yes, it may suck at the time, but you will thank yourself later for it! As for studying, I must admit I am not the best at, but I know it works well for most people!
Don’t be afraid to socialize with classmates & professors:
Without socializing with your peers and professors, the semester will surely drag on and will not be very much enjoyable. College is the best time to socialize and make new friends, as connects are being made that can greatly impact your future. Professors seem so intense and scary to me, but I always try to make myself noticed and am always friendly!
Lastly, don’t stress it!
Yes, college is one of the biggest things that determines your future and is putting you in a huge pile of debt (LOL), but it should never change you or start growing those gray hairs early! Just remember to relax and breathe and it will really be over before you know it. Make sure to try out some yoga and visit the gym often; I promise it helps!
Let me know if you have any further questions, as I am here for each one of you! I love reading your guy’s comments and feedback. Ya’ll are the best! XOXO
